Welcome to Room 24's webpage.
Here you will find resources for students, parents/guardians, and
all other things "Room 24"!
ABOUT ROOM 24: As you will soon find out, this website
will eventually focus on the inner workings of our classroom.
Throughout the school year, Room 24 will transform from a room full
of eager young people (I'm including myself in that
categorization), into a community where students will be encouraged
to create community, build character, and strive for academic
excellence.
ABOUT MR. TAMAYO: Although this is my first year
teaching, I come to Briarcrest with 6 years experience working with
young people. After graduating from the University of
Washington in 2000 with a BA in Society and Justice, I worked for 4
years with Americorps (1 year as a member in South Carolina and 3
years in Seattle as a Team Leader and Community Outreach
Coordinator).
In 2005 I transitioned to work for SafeFutures Youth Center which
contracted with the Seattle Housing Authority to provide case
management, educational resources, and leadership training for
youth in the High Point Garden community of Southwest
Seattle. With SafeFutures, I created an after school math and
science program for middle schoolers and coordinated SFYC's
Asset-Based Leadership Program.
2006 brought me to San Francisco to pursue graduate studies in
education at the University of San Francisco where I student taught
in the 2nd and 5th grades. I earned a MA in Teaching in the
spring of 2008. The focus of my masters project was
integrating personal student identity development in 5th/6th grade
classrooms, which I plan to implement in our classroom this
upcoming school year.
