This is my third
year here at Brookside Elementary, and my fourteenth in the
Shoreline School District. I grew up in Renton, where my mother
still lives. I graduated from Renton High School and Washington
State University. My Masters degree is from Western Washington
University. Except for 3 years in Miami, I have always lived in
Washington. I have two grown children, and 3 beautiful grand
children.
During my 17 year
teaching career I taught grades 2,3, 5 and 6 in Lake Washington,
Kent and Bellingham. I also a taught classes in Instructional
Theory, Lesson Design and Cooperative Learning as a member of the
professional development team in Kent. In 1994 I came to Shoreline
as the principal of Sunset Elementary. I have two grown children
and three grandchildren. My hobbies include knitting and sewing,
travel, projects around my home, and cheering for the
Cougs.
I am dedicated to
public education. I believe that a quality and effective system of
public education is crucial to the success of a free society. Mass
media distills important issues into sound bites. For voters to
make good decisions for our community and country, we must be able
to go beyond the sound bite. To fully understand complex issues,
our students must be literate in order to research, question, and
work in concert with others to solve problems.
I also
believe that effective teaching is both an art and a science, and
we have outstanding practitioners here at Brookside. We know we are
preparing students to become good citizens and life long learners,
and take that responsibility very seriously.
Happily,
successfully educating our students is also due to the strong
partnership we have with our parents. The Brookside PTA has won
awards for its outstanding work by the Washington State PTA, and
our teachers have enjoyed the many benefits that active and
supportive parents provide.
