I am John Simard, principal of Brookside Elementary School. I joined the Brookside team in the 2014-2015 school year.
I was born and raised in southern California where I attained my BA in anthropology from CSU Fullerton. Later, I secured a multiple-subject teaching credential from CSU Long Beach and moved to the bay area with my wife, Grace.
After several years teaching students in grades 4 & 5 at G.W. Hellyer Elementary School in San Jose, I decided I wanted to "scale up" my work and connect it to more kids and families.
I attended the Principal Leadership Institute program at UC Berkeley where I received a MA in education and school administrator credential. After graduation, I joined San Francisco Unified School District as an instructional coach at Dr. William Cobb Elementary School and later became principal of Sunnyside Elementary School.
I believe in working with children using an "asset-based" lens focusing on building on each child's strengths. School is a place where we seek to not only challenge students with strong academics, but broaden their scope with a variety of experiences and give them opportunities to grow socially and emotionally. School should be challenging, empowering, and fun.
Living in the Pacific Northwest has been great! I look forward to continuing my work with Brookside staff and families as we deepen our expertise in the Common Core State Standards and prepare our students for Kellogg MS, Shorecrest HS, and the college or career connected to their interests and passion.
