This week in Social Studies:
4/21 - 4/25

Note: this is the second of two WASL weeks at Einstein so we are on a modified schedule Tuesday-Thursday.

Students are finishing the first drafts of their essays on Westward Expansion this week and then we are doing a peer editing day on Friday.

/14 - 4/18

Note: this is the first of two WASL weeks at Einstein so we are on a modified schedule Wednesday-Friday.
Students will take a test on Westward Expansion on Tuesday. Before and after that they will complete their outlines for their Westward Expasion outlines.

4/7 - 4/11

The last student groups will pressent this week. Once we are done with that students will complete a compare/contrast worksheet based on the notes they took from the other presentations and the notes they took for their research.

3/24 - 3/28

Monday students will finish their presentations. Tuesday students will rehearse their presentations/newscasts and start presenting. Student presentations will use most of the class time this week. Students will take notes while the other groups are presenting.


3/17 - 3/21

We will work on our Westward Expansion projects (doing research) in the library on Monday and Tuesday. The rest of the week students will work on creating their News Stories in the classroom. Completing this work is their only homework for the week.

Week of 3/10 - 3/13

We will continue to work on the projects, looking at Westward Expansion thorugh the eyes, for the most part, of minority groups. Students are working in pairs and will make a presentation to the class as well as write an individual reseearch paper on their chosen topic.

Note: Thursday is the end of the 2nd Trimester and Friday is a non-student day.


Week of 3/3 - 3/7

This week we will present the poems about the historical figures of the early 1800's. From there we will watch a movie about Manifest Destiny, discuss the origins of Manifest Destiny, and then begin an extended project about Westward Expansion largely through the eyes of the minority groups that were affected by it or took part in it.

Week of 2/25-2/29

This week we will start with the foreign policy of the young United States. We will follow that up by looking at some of the individuals who played major roles in the government during the first decades of the 1800's.

Week of 2/20-2/22

This week we will look at the Louisiana Purchase in the context of Westward Expansion. There will also be a mapping test on Friday on Westward Expansion.


Week of 2/4-2/8

This week we finished our examination of the ideas of Hamilton and Jefferson and looked at differences among current political parties. We then started our study of the Westward expansion of the country by creating maps.

Week of 1/28-2/1

Last week we finished our study of the United States Bill of Rights. We then begin our look at the different ideas of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson about the role of government in our society.

Week of 1/22-1/25

Last week we studied the United States Bill of Rights. We looked at a Parent's Bill of Rights as well as creating a Student's Bill of Rights as examples related to the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights respectively.

Week of 1/14-1/18

We studied the United States Consitution.

Students will turn in a packet of work on Monday, 1/14

There was a test on the United States government on Friday, January 18th.

Teaching Schedule: I teach 8th Grade Social Studies (United States History) during periods 2, 3, and 5. I will also be working in Mr. McDowell's classroom during 4th period and Ms. Holsten's classroom during 6th period. First period is my conference/planning period.

How To Navigate This Website:

1. DOCUMENTS section is where I've posted the academic plans, course outlines, and other important class documents.  If you are having trouble finding something, try this section, but keep in mind that daily assignments will generally be kept in the homework section.

  2. HOMEWORK section will be used for posting the daily assignments and for highlighting topics discussed in class. If you're absent, you can use this section to find out what work  you will need to make up.  If you were present, use this section to double check information about homework that is due. This section will also be used to post due dates, and deadlines for late work and extra credit.
