2007 - 2008
School Year
In this course we will be exploring a variety of science in an integrated way. The year is divided into five main units, but the connections among science fields, mathematics and society are seen throughout our studies. The units are:
Throughout the year the skills of lab technique & safety, accurate metric measurement, scientific inquiry, technical writing, modeling and analysis are developed. Grades are based on: daily class work (seen in the Lab Journal & worksheets), journals (composition book), extended lab reports, projects, research reports, tests and homework (often found in the Lab Journal, sometimes on worksheets in the 3-ring binder). See the Block Policies for the grading scale. The 5 main rules in this class are:
Discipline: As a student in this classroom you should have high expectations for yourself and for others around you. I do my best to set this tone and to provide a positive environment. If it should become necessary to remind students of proper behavior I will try to do so respectfully and in a timely way. If I am unable to see improvements after a reminder, especially if a student is being disrespectful or unsafe, I will say to them, "This is a warning." By that I mean that I will have to take further disciplinary action if their behavior does not improve. Disciplinary actions that may be appropriate are: o *talking with the student privately and a phone call home o *a detention o a "Time Out" if the behavior is out of control +/or unsafe I also expect respectful and responsible behavior when a guest teacher is in the room due to my absence. If a guest teacher finds it necessary to discipline a student(s) and leaves me the name(s) of the insubordinate student(s) I will follow up on that by assigning a detention. Expectations For Students in Advanced Science Although many of the activities offered in the Advanced Science 8 class may be similar to those in Integrated Science 8, you can expect the following differences: • Pacing may be faster • Increased minimum requirements to “Meet Standard” on assignments • Selection of literature or readings for class and homework • If opportunities become available, we may design student-directed applied learning projects As a student in Advanced Science you are expected to: • Plan for and manage your time effectively, which includes needing minimal teacher intervention in managing long-term projects and assignments • Demonstrate initiative and maturity in starting and maintaining class discussions • Produce polished, error-free final drafts for all writing assignments |
