Welcome!
Welcome to first grade at Highland Terrace! This is a year of
academic challenge, as well as personal and social growth for your
child. In reading, children focus on comprehension strategies and
fluency, as well as phonemic awareness and phonics skills. First
graders expand their writing skills through work with forms of
writing, as well as grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Math
concepts are introduced and practiced through topics emphasizing
problem solving strategies and skill development. The areas of
social studies, science, art, health and technology continue to
highlight independent work habits and cooperative learning.
First grade is an exciting year, full of new opportunities for
children to build upon kindergarten experiences! I look
forward to working together with you and your children.
Newsletter Information
As a form of communication between school and home, each child is
to keep a "Take-Home folder" in their backpack. It is your child's
responsibility to check the "Home" side of their take-home folder
each day, and to review all school papers with you. Anything that
needs to be returned to school is to be put on the "School" side.
They are to check their folders when they arrive in the classroom
each morning and give me any notes, forms, or other paperwork from
home.
Also, on the weekly homework sheet, there might be notices of
upcoming events, field trip forms to be completed, or other items
of interest or concern. Please be sure to check this when the
homework packet comes home with your child on Mondays
Highland Terrace also sends home with each student a weekly
newsletter to parents on Tuesdays.
Developing a sense of responsibility for communication between
family and teacher is an important part of your child's education.
I appreciate your support in advance!
