Comprehension Focus
Visualization
Our
class is focusing on visualization right now. The students are
learning about using sensory details to get a better understanding
of a story or piece of text. Visualizing is similar to having a
movie, about what is being read, playing in one's mind. Students
are also thinking about what types of smells, feelings, sounds, and
tastes they may encounter if they were in the story. This helps
students get a better understanding of what they are reading, what
characters are feeling, the setting, and the events happening in
the story.

Cornell Notes
Cornell Notes are being introduced in class
as a way of tracking the comprehension strategies one is using
while reading. We will be using these to concentrate on a specific
comprehension strategy as well as using these to record the use of
several strategies. Under the "Documents" section, there are guides
to using and setting up Cornell Notes.

What
Happens in Read 180?
Journals: Students write in
thier journals every day at the beginning of class. They have the
option of writing about a prompt or writing something of their
choice.
Book Talks:
Once every two weeks (or so), the class goes to the library for a
book talk with Ms. Hebgen, the school librarian. Students share
interesting books they have read and learn about a variety of new
books. They also get the opportunity to check out and return
books.
Effort and Participation Points:
Students have the opportunity to earn 100 points eahc week for
their effort and participation in this class. The students give
themselves a grade each week. In addition to giving themself an
effort and participation grade, students also set a goal for the
next week of learning and reflect on the past week's
goal.
Fluency Fridays: Each
Friday, we do an activity which helps students increase their
fluency. We do things such as Readers' Theater and timed readings
to help the students increase the pace they read at as well as how
smoothly they read aloud.
