Welcome to fifth grade at Lake Forest Park Elementary taught by Mr.
Nelson and Mrs. Wildey. We also have Mrs. Cleary teaching a
Fourth/Fifth combination class. We have an exciting year
ahead of us, filled with learning and fun.
As part of our getting to know each other activities, I would like
each of you to bring in some photos, map, or any small objects that
represent a special memory of your summer. These could be any
small thing: a bag of sawdust from your kitchen remodel, a photo
from camp or family vacation, an art project, a favorite summer
reading book. Please bring these items in immediately, as we
will begin sharing them on Thursday or Friday.
Students will use a three-ring binder with subject dividers and a
daily planner in the classroom. This allows efficient use of
class time and is an excellent preparation for sixth grade and
middle school. I encourage you to monitor your child’s
daily academic activity by keeping up with their binder and the
planner. I will provide both dividers and planners.
Be sure to plan to join us on Back to School Night on
Thursday, September 24 when I will discuss my homework policy and
expectations and the nuts and bolts of fifth grade. Please note
that assigned work is expected the following day unless otherwise
specified.
Please send in seven dollars with your child to cover the cost of
Scholastic News, a weekly magazine that we will use as a tool in
our reading, writing and science lessons. Please send
in your payment – checks payable to Lake Forest Park
Elementary School or cash – as soon as possible.
Checks are preferable.
One further note: we have last lunch this year, and it will
therefore be important for your child to bring a healthy snack each
day, which we will eat at mid-morning. Sugary (i.e.,
non-healthy) snacks are not nourishing and don’t help the
learning process (or classroom management). Please send in a
water bottle with your child so he or she can avoid the post-recess
rush to the water fountain.
There will be a lot of information coming home in the next week, as
we set up schedules and our year of learning. The L.F.P.
P.T.A., and of course the L.F.P. school website are excellent tools
for you to use, if you have internet access.
I look forward to our teamwork this year, with parent, student, and
teachers.
Mr. Nelson
