Medications

All medications brought to school must have written approval by a health care practitioner and the parent/guardian on the Permission to Administer Medications form.

 This includes :

1. Over the counter items/medications like cough drops or strips, pills/tablets of any kind, Tums, and Tylenol and Vitamins.

2.  Prescriptions medications from the pharmacy, like antibiotics and ADHD medications.

All medications and over the counter products must be brought to the office in the original container. Pills, tablets, capsules or dissolving strips sent in baggies, foil, kleenex (i.e.not in original container)  will not be given and parents will be called to pick up the medication and or sign the required permissions.

Students are not allowed to carry medicines in lunch boxes or back packs  to take themselves unless specifically approved by MD and the parent in writing on the District Medication form. Some older students with inhalers may be approved to carry and self medicate with this type of approval process.

Forms for parent and physician signatures may be downloaded from the DOCUMENTS area of this web site.

LifeThreatening Conditions

All students with any life threatening condition such as Bee sting alleries, peanut allergies. diabetes, severe asthma, severe seizures etc.  must have  a care plan  submitted by their  Medical Doctor  and have all medications/ supplies for this plan on file at school before the  first day of student attendance Students with life-threating health conditions will not be allowed to attend school until they have medication and/or treatment orders and a nursing plan in place.

Washington State law (SHB 2834) requires these forms be completed before the beginning of each school year even if there have been no changes in the plans from the previous year.

There are treatment/care plan order forms for download in the documents area of this site.  We provide them as a potentially useful framework for physician orders.  The plans provide step by step orders that translate well into emergency care plans for students.  Physicians are free to write orders within a different format.

Diabetics/ Epipens
Diabetes and any student requiring orders for Epi-Pens for allergies ( BEE stings, Peanut, Nut, Food and Seafood) are considered to have life threatening conditions.

Asthma
Students with asthma that have been hospitalized two or more times in the past year because of their asthma are considered to have a life threatening condition at least for that school year.  Students with asthma that are controlled with medication and have not required hospitalization in the past 12 months are not automatically considered to have a life threatening condition.

Seizures
Some students with seizure disorders are considered to have life threatening conditions, please consult with the nurse about your student if they have seizures.

Life threatening conditions are not limited to the above conditions, please consult the nurse if your student has health concerns that would be considered life threatening.
Our goal is to keep all of our students safe and healthy.  Parents are an important piece in formulating this plan for their students.  The treatment plans this process produces help insure the best care for students.

Attendance tissuebox.gifand Sick Days

Any day that your student is sick and will be home for the school day the parent or caregiver needs to call the Main Office at 368-4150 to notify the registrar  of the illness and to excuse your student's absence. Parents not making this call will get a call from PARKWOOD SAFE ARRIVAL to verify that your student is home sick. You must call the school each day your child is sick.
