- Students should practice reading within their appropriate
reading zones for approximately 60 minutes a day to maximize their
reading growth throughout the year.
- Students in Grade 2-6 are STAR tested in the first weeks of
school to place them in their appropriate AR zones. This zone
allows students to read books that should not be too easy nor too
hard, and maximize their reading growth throughout the year. (Note:
First grade students are tested on an as needed basis & may
practice finding AR books, taking AR quizzes & recording
results on their logs.)
- Books in the library that have AR quizzes are marked with color
dots representing different reading levels.
(See Color Dot Chart
below.) Most students have 2-3 color dots from which they
may read. We recommend that they start with their easiest color
dot, especially primary students, and work their way up in their
zone.
- When a student finishes reading a book (picture books should be
read 2-3 times), he/she may then take an AR quiz on a computer. The
questions are multiple choice and assess a student's comprehension
only. If a student passes a test (60%-70% correct depending on the
book length) he/she earns points that accumulate throughout the
trimester and year.
- Most teachers set individual goals a student should earn within
a trimester which translate into their AR grade or independent
reading grade on the report card.
- To maximize the benefits of the program a student's average
percent correct should be 85% or better. Their average book level
should be near the middle or high end of their zone. We also stress
that students read a variety of fiction & non-fiction books.
Top 2 AR point earners by grade
level for the previous week are announced each Monday on the
intercom.
- Top 10 Point Earners for the week are posted
on the library door: Week of 9/21-25/09: Michelle T.(86.9), Zachary B. (28.7),
Emma P. (24.1), Caleb C. (18), Naode M. (18), Rian D. (16.5),

- AR Point Bulletin Board - Student pictures are posted in the
appropriate point category on the bulletin board outside the school
office. Students must earn 5 points to get on the board.
- Teachers set up different motivational methods within their own
classrooms.
- End of Year Awards - Top point earners in each grade
level are recognized at the end of the year assembly with
certificates & sometimes prizes.
