Welcome To Summer School
I wanted to give
all students some basic guidence before the beginning of summer
school, so what you find below are what I would consider the FAQ
for Int 1 this summer.
Q. What are some of the materials I need for
this course.
A. Every student will need a
composition notebook, a red pen, a regular pen, and a binder.
Q. Are there any other
recommended materials?
A. A calculater (TI 82 or
greater) is always a good investment as you will be using it every
year you take math. Every student will also get a folder, but if
you feel like getting a new one, be my guest. Also on a more
general note bring some water and a snack if you need.
Q. I noticed you said
pens, do we need pencils?
A. You will never be using a pencil this summer for math, we will
only be using pens.
Q.
Why?
A. Because I said so
Q.
Why?
A. Math at this stage of development is knowing not only what you
did right, but also what you did wrong so we can fix it. I can't
fix what I can't see. This way you the student will have a log of
your progress, and I can see what your process for solving problems
is.
Q. Someone said no homework. Is
this true?
A. Summer school is still during
the summer. Students should have some time to themselves. There is
no homework unless
for some reason a student has
decided to use some of their "off" time in class and is therefore
behind.
Q. What is "off" time?
A. If a student is not
responsible enough to get the work done in a timely manner,
socializes during work time, is late to class, or engaged in other
activities. In short, anytime students are not doing what we they
supposed to be doing.
Q. Will we be doing everything we
would normally do during the regular year?
A. No
Q . . . .
A. Ok, this summer course is
geared to lay some foundational skills. A student who takes this
course should be able not only to excell in the Integrated 1
curriculum, but also in Integrated 2. But we can't do it all. What
we can do is ensure that what is missed is easily able to be
connected to what you have learned.
Q. So what will we
learn.
A. Right now we (Mr. Anderson and
me) are still in the process of making the curriculum complete. In
general strokes it will be...
- 1 week (probably
more) of algebra work and practice
- 1 week of graphing
Linear and Quadratic Equations
- Basic
Trig.
- Graphing and
Understanding Inequalities
- Square and Cube
Roots
- Maybe Basic
Probability
- Maybe
Perimeter, Area, and Volume
