Text of the WASL information mailing of January 2009:

Dear Parents/Guardians;

RE:  WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning)

The 2009 WASL assessments are quickly approaching.   You are receiving this letter because you have a SW student in grade 10 taking the WASL this spring or a student in grade 11/12 working to meet standard on one or more sections of the WASL.

The Spring 2009 Test Schedule is as follows:
Reading    March 16, 17
Writing        March 18, 19
Math        April 13, 14
Science        April 20, 21
Students must be present for both days of testing in a content area in order to receive a score in that area.  SW will operate with a modified bell schedule during WASL testing days, with testing from 7:50 to 10:20 AM.  Classes will begin at 10:30 AM.   Bell  schedules will be posted on the school website and advertised to students.  Buses run on a regular schedule.

For the graduating classes of 2009-2012: Students must pass the reading and writing WASL, a state approved alternative to the WASL or an assessment for students in special education.  Students can meet the state’s math requirement by passing the math WASL, a state approved alternative or an assessment for students in special education, OR they can continue to earn math credits until they graduate. However, they must take the math WASL each year as well.  Students who pass the reading, writing and math assessment earn a Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA) or Certificate of Individual Achievement (CIA) and a high school diploma.  Students who fulfill the math requirements by earning math credits do not receive a certificate but do earn a diploma.

Seniors and Juniors/Classes of 2009 and 2010: Grade 11 and 12 students who did not meet standard in any of the three areas last spring or summer will be automatically registered to take that portion of the test this spring.  If you have any questions about which subject(s) your student needs to retake, please contact his/her counselor. Please be sure that your student attends school on both days for the given content area.  The next opportunity to retest will be during the summer.

Sophomores/Class of 2011: All grade 10 students are required to take the WASL this spring.  Please be sure that your student is present on all days of testing.  If your student misses any of the tests, their next opportunity to test will be this summer.

If your student took and passed three sections of the WASL last spring as a 9th grader, he/she is expected to take the Science portion this April.  (The Science WASL isn’t an option for grade 9 students.)  Students who have met standard on the WASL start school at 10:30 AM on test days.

Freshmen/Class of 2012:  Grade 9 students have the option to take the Reading, Writing and/or Math portions of the WASL early (prior to the required 10th grade testing).  This option is meant for students who feel that they are ready to pass one or more sections of the WASL and would like to get that part of the graduation requirement completed. These students must pre-register to take the test.   This option was explained to Grade 9 parents in an earlier mailing.

Shorewood will offer WASL Preparation Classes to help students prepare for any section of the WASL – Mathematics, Reading or Writing. These classes will take place after school, from 2:45 to 3:45 PM.  Registration isn’t necessary.  Students may attend one or all sessions. The following will be reviewed:  test formats, test-taking strategies and practice questions.

WRITING:  Room 316
February 23, 24, 25, 26

READING:  Room 402
March 3, 4, 5

MATHEMATICS:  Room 108
February 4, 11, March 4, 11, 25, April 8

We hope this information is helpful.  Included is a flyer from the state that outlines WASL Options.   Please check the state’s website to learn more about the WASL:  http://www.waslinfo.com.
