Ninth grade optional WASL testing cancelled

The number of ninth-grade registrations outpaced available funding

OLYMPIA — In an effort to avoid nearly $500,000 in unfunded testing costs, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has cancelled optional Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) testing for ninth graders effective immediately.

SHOREWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
WASL ALTERNATIVE – COLLECTION OF EVIDENCE - AFTER SCHOOL SESSIONS

All high school students are expected to earn a Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA) by demonstrating proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics before graduation.  The CAA is a state-endorsement of a student’s knowledge and skills in these areas.  Most students will earn a CAA by passing the WASL.  Some students however may need to use an assessment other than the WASL to demonstrate their skills.  One of the possible options is the Collection of Evidence.  (COE)

What is this option?  Students compile a set of classroom work samples with the help of a teacher(s).  This option may be used for meeting the reading, writing and or mathematic standard.
How does it work?  Students use subject-specific classroom work samples developed under a teacher’s supervision.  Students must follow state guidelines for Collections of Evidence (COE). The guidelines specify the number of work samples that must be completed and the knowledge and skills students must show through those work samples.
How does a student meet the requirement?  Each student’s COE is scored at the state level by a panel of educators selected and trained by the state.  Collections must show a student has the same level of knowledge and skills that are tested on the WASL.

Even though a student completes a COE, he/she must also take the WASL this spring.
After school sessions to complete the COE are open to seniors and juniors who have taken the WASL in a specific area at least once.

Students may decide to complete a COE in one or more subjects.  After school sessions will begin during the second week of December and continue through January of 2008.  Completion will require extra student time and perhaps extended after school sessions.
