Shorewood Preschool Academy

The Shorewood Preschool Academy offers two classes, Preschool and Pre-kindergarten to help prepare young learners for kindergarten and their early elementary years. Each class' enrollment is limited to ten students in order to provide a warm and nurturing environment for the young learners and ample time to interact with our high school student-teachers.  The Pre-kindergarten class is currently full for the 2009 - 2010 school.  So as to ease the scheduling needs of parents with older children, starting the second week of the school year, our program follows the Shoreline School District calendar - though enrollment is not restricted to Shoreline residents.

Being directly associated with Shorewood High School has many advantages that will enrich your child's learning experience.  We directly partner with Shorewood's Teaching Academy and Child Psychology courses, through which the high school students do an internship in our classroom and directly and individually interact with our preschool students.  Moreover, we visit other high school classrooms to participate in joint projects, such as storytime and cooking.  One of the highlights of the year comes at Halloween when our preschoolers go trick-or-treating around campus.

About Our Preschool

Our primary goal is to nurture and educate children while providing an opportunity for high school students to explore the field of teaching and other career opportunities, which involves working with children and their families.

We strive to provide a preschool program that engages the natural curiosity and imagination of children through relevant real life projects and addresses multiple intelligences in creative and integrated ways.  Our classes include both self-directed and teacher-directed activities .

We nurture positive social skills and self-esteem.  Social awareness and conflict resolution are fostered, not only through inter-personal exchanges and in play, but also through our curriculum.  All children are valued for their individual attributes and students discover the necessity and rewards of cooperation through collaborative class and small group activities.

The Teacher

I have been teaching preschool at Shorewood High School since 2005.  I have taught both our Pre-K (4 and 5 year olds) and Preschool (2 - 4 years old) classes during that time.  I have an Early Childhood Education Degree with emphasis in Special Education.  Prior to my time at Shorewood, I took time off to be with my sons, Mike and Alex while they were young.  I have also taught preschool at Shoreline Community College's Parent-Child Center as well as my youngest son's co-op preschool.

I grew up in northwest Florida, but love living near the mountains of Seattle.  I enjoy nature and being outdoors, hiking and canoeing are some of my favorite activities.  I also like sports, particularly football.  My family is important to me and I love spending time with my guys; husband Matt, sons Mike and Alex.  I stay busy volunteering with and attending my sons' activities.

Twinkie

Twinkie, our classroom pet guinea pig.

Twinkie is a true Shorewood native.  He was born in the Chemistry classroom here on campus in the fall of 2005.  He loves getting attention from the children almost as much as he loves eating treats (baby carrots, parsley and dandelion greens).
