Homework will be discussed in detail in class but a brief reminder with the due date will be posted under "homework."

I teach the following classes:

  • Beginning classes in film and digital where we study the basics of either the digital darkroom or a wet darkroom, how the cameras work, a bit of the history of photography and students practice using their newfound information by shooting assignments that are designed to teach them new ideas about composition and creative approaches to traditional subject matter like landscape or portraiture.
  • Advanced Photography  where we focus is on concepts, advanced techniques and documentary photogaphy.
  • English 9
A little bit about me:
I have BA in English and an MFA in Photography, a regular teaching certificate and a vocational teaching certificate.
I grew up in a family of journalists going as far back as my great grandfather.  My great grandfather and my grandmother were strong writers.  My husband is a writer who worked for many years as a reporter, editorial writer and columnist.  He has two published books which I was honored to helped edit.
I was considered a rebel in my family when I became a newspaper photographer instead of a writer.  Although I got my teaching certificates 15 years ago, I continue to work as a freelance photographer.  It is a passion and identity.  In 2005, I had a book on the Buffalo Chip biker campground published featuring my photos and text by Pulizer winning PI cartoonist David Horsey. Two years ago, I was awarded a CityArtist Grant through Seattle's Office of Arts and Culture.  I photographed Yesler Terrace low income housing project.  The pictures were shown a year ago last December.  This summer I self-published a book of photos shot on trains.  You can find it on my Web site:  sallytonkin.com (Coming soon!)
I haven't taught English since I my first year in teaching.  I don't know if I'll be any good at it but I can share my love of reading, writing and ideas. I can help you improve if you're interested and willing to work hard.
Finally, you might have met my dog before you met me.  Willie is the yellow lab you see wandering around in a blue vest.  He began working here six years ago after we were awarded several grants to train and use him as a therapy dog.   He works with district special education students and teachers.  If you are allergic to dogs, afraid or have religious restrictions, let me know.  When he isn't with the special ed program, he's usually in my classroom but there are many other options for him.
