Syre Sentinel, April 22, 2008

Dear Families:

We are approaching that time of the year when we start to consider your child’s room and teacher assignment for the 2008-09 school year, and it is important that you know the criteria we consider when making those placements.

Each classroom is a small community, and we support the notion that classrooms need to be representative of the various social, academic, physical needs, and abilities of your children.  Therefore, we consider the following when we place students in classrooms for the next year.

•    Maintain a balance of boys and girls; equal if possible.
•    Maintain an equal academic distribution & balance of students.
•    Encourage the development of new social groups.
•    Maintain an equal distribution of students who have a positive influence.
•    Accommodate special academic and social needs.
•    Accommodate the benefits of having a male or female teacher.

Before we create classes, though, there may be some circumstances of which we are not aware or families may have other information that would be helpful. If you feel you have additional information about your child that you think will help us in placing her/him, please come to the office and complete a Placement Consideration Form. These forms will be available April 29 and should be returned to the main office by 4:00 p.m. May 8.   This is NOT a request form, but an opportunity for families to provide information about their child socially and academically.

In this process we ask that you do not request specific teachers, or ask teachers for confidential considerations.  Together, the teachers and I are very careful about an appropriate placement for each student.  We will make our best plans this spring, though none of us can control teacher changes, class population shifts, or other changes over the summer.  Right before the first day of school, we will provide placements to families; we do not accept request for changes after school starts and rely heavily on the parent input form.  (Also, if you’re moving or changing schools, please let us know!)

I appreciate our partnership and your support of our placement process as a key component to our educational program.  Syre is a great school because of our awesome staff and families.

Happy Spring!
David Tadlock, Principal
